a rainy day

Buying and selling silkworms, Herve Joncour earned each year a sufficient sum to assure himself and his wife of such comforts as pass for luxury in the minds of country dwellers. He enjoyed his possessions discreetly and the prospect of achieving true wealth left him entirely indifferent. Besides, he was one of those men who like to be observers at their own lives, any ambition actually to participate in them being considered inappropriate.
It will have been noted that such people observe their destiny much as most people tend to observe a rainy day.

Somebody asked me the other day about a friend of mine: So what kind of a guy is he ?
This passage from Barrico's beautiful tale instantly came to my mind. This is how i fell about myself these days.
